Valery I. Mezhlauk was a
Soviet government and party official. He was born in Kharkov.
He was well known for
his expressive caricatures made during various official meetings.
In 1924 – 1931 – the
member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the National Economy
of the USSR, the Head of the Main Metal
Department (GlavMetall), the Vice-Chairman
of the Supreme Soviet of
the National Economy of the USSR.
In 1931 – 1934 – the
first Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Agency of the USSR.
Since 1934 – the
Vice-Chairman of the Council of the People’s Commissars of the USSR,
the Vice-Chairman of the
Council of Labor and Defense of the USSR and the Chairman of
the State Planning
Agency of the USSR
In February – October of
1937 – the People’s Commissar of heavy industry of the USSR, then
again the Vice-Chairman
of the Council of the People’s Commissars and the Chairman of the
State Planning Committee
of the USSR.
Under
his leadership the industrialization in the USSR was carried out.
He was accused of
contacts with the German government, participation since 1925 in the “right”
group organization and
leading of the Latvian counter-revolutionary underground organization.
On December 1, 1937 he
was arrested and sentenced to death. Was executed by shooting.
