Konovalov was born in Makeyevka of Donetsk region. Since 1954 he worked as a gas –
man in the Open – Hearth Plant of the Alapayevsk metallurgical works. From 1956 to 1958
worked at the Verkhne – Saldinsky metallurgical works and developed from an assistant
steelmaker into the Head of the Open – Hearth Plant. From 1958 to 1973 – the Head of the
Production Department at the Cherepovets Steel Mill. In 1973 he was appointed the Chief
Project Engineer of the Cherepovets Steel Mill.
Igor Mikhailovich is a high – skilled metallurgical engineer with a great production experience.
Under his leadership and with his direct participation the designing has been completed and the
Converter Plant, the largest in the world Blast Furnace № 5 at the Cherepovets Steel Mill, as well as some metallurgical facilities at the Izhora Works named after A.A. Zhdanov have been
successfully put into operation, and the general program of the ferrous metallurgy
development till 2000 has been elaborated.
