HISTORY

Already in the second year of its activity “Gipromez” started elaboration of more than 20 projects, including seven large industrial complexes:

  • Krivorozhsky Iron and Steel Plant
  • Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works
  • Uralsky Machine-Building Plant
  • Stalingrad Tractor Plant
  • Kuznetsky (Tel’bessky) Integrated Iron and Steel Works

A bit later some new metallurgical projects were elaborated in Lenigrad:
  • Azovstal
  • Dneprospetsstal
  • Zaporozhstal

The reconstruction projects of several works located in the South of the country were prepared:
  • Works named after Dzerzhinsky

The further development of the ferrous metallurgy required not only preparation of the new projects but also the thoroughly worked–out long–run plan of this key industry development as well as solving of the numerous technical and economic problems. “Lengipromez” made a good use of the gained experience in designing the home projects and the foreign technical achievements, and already in the thirties attained success in working-out of the own methodology and the basic principles of the metallurgical plant designing, in creation of the own base of the standard and engineering documentation.

In the stern years of the Great Patriotic War many employees of “Gipromez” went to the front or joined the people’s volunteer corps. “Gipromez” was evacuated to the Urals where under the severe conditions of the wartime continued to work out the metallurgical projects. In the wartime, according to “Gipromez” designs prepared immediately on the plant sites, the evacuated equipment intended for manufacture of the products for the front–line needs was installed and mastered first of all. The works on installation of the evacuated equipment were conducted at the Novotagilsky, Magnitogorsky, Pervouralsky, Sinarsky and some other plants. Moreover, to the Institute designs some new large works were constructed, as well: in Chelyabinsk – a metallirgical and a pipe–rolling plants, in Nizhni Tagil – a metallurgical plant. Construction of the first facilities of the Uzbek and Kazakh metallurgical works was started. The open–hearth furnaces at the Uzbek and Kazakh works have been commissioned in the wartime already.
